　　这是诗人兼翻译家欧阳昱写的一本类似读书笔记，谈翻译实践和翻译观的笔记非小说类作品。全书写作费时五年多，其间翻译出版了五六本译着（含中译英、英译中的诗歌、长篇小说、短篇小说，以及其他艺术类作品），从中提取了大量鲜活、生动的实例，并在《译心雕虫》的基础上，由此而又生发了「模煳翻译」、「翻译心理学」、「翻忆」（翻译记忆学）、「总体翻译」、「口语化翻译」、「不译」、「创译」，以及「实验翻译」等自创微理论。

　　本书与之前《译心雕虫》的叙述形式不同之处在于，给出每一个实例时，都要事先问读者一个「怎么译」的问题，让读者参与思考和试译，然后对照译者下面给出的译文。当然，如果不想动脑筋、花精力，也可直接略过而进入译文，径直加以对照，得出各位想得出的结论。总的来说，还是那句老话：不要过于认真，只要好玩就行，一切以创意为前提。

本书特色

　　澳华诗人欧阳昱经过五年的时间，再次辑录自己丰富的翻译心得，展现独到的翻译微理论。书中六百多条笔记，纵横中外名家文学着作，不管是中翻英、还是英翻中，即使是从未有人处理过的文句，经过作者提问「怎么译？」并与读者一同脑力激盪，总能走出一条翻译的小径来。

作者简介

欧阳昱

　　武汉大学英美文学学士，上海华东师大英澳文学硕士，墨尔本拉特罗布（La Trobe）大学英文系澳大利亚文学博士。现为澳大利亚作协会员。

　　曾任武汉大学英文系讲座教授，自2012年以来，一直是上海对外经贸大学「思源」学者兼客座教授，以及该校澳大利亚研究中心成员，为研究生和本科生讲授中英文学翻译和英文创意写作。

　　截至2018年5月，已出版中英文原创及译着97种，曾数度获澳大利亚的各种创作基金奖和文学奖。
　　2014年，60多万字的译着《致命的海滩：澳大利亚流犯流放史》，由南京大学出版社出版并获得2014年澳中理事会翻译奖。
　　2016年获得澳大利亚理事会英文诗歌创作基金奖和澳中理事会特别贡献奖（2000-2016）。

§　是非小人
 
看电视时，陡然听到某人说另一个人是个「是非小人」。我语塞，我无语，因为我无法把这个词成功地译成英文。小人可译，是「little person」，但是非呢？
 
如果借助反译，把「是非」译成「是是」，更把「是是」减半，译成「是」，那就可以译成「a yes little person」或「a little yes person」，就像英文的「yesman」（好好先生、唯唯诺诺的人、凡事都只说是是，而不表示任何反对意见的人），不过，原来的「非」就没了。「非」可以译成「trouble-maker」（搬弄是非的人）。那么，是否可以译成「a trouble-making little person」呢？
 
似乎可以，因为「是非小人」中，强调的不是「是」，而是「非」，搬弄是非的「非」。
 
§　回文
 
回文难译。我指的不是回族的文字，而是指绕过去，又绕回来的文字，比如这句：When the going gets tough, the tough gets going。意思是说，事情越难办，不怕难的人就越敢迎头而上，但这只是译出来了意思，而没有回味，回文的味道。
 
倒是有一句中文回文，跟这个意思相当，尽管并非字字相对，即「明知山有虎，偏向虎山行」。
 
那么，有人会说，「难者不会，会者不难」这句，是否能够译成类似的英文？
 
回答是：可以，但似乎又需要「反动」，先译后半边，再译前半边了。试译在此：The able find easy what the unable do not。只是无法做到中文那样字字回文。
 
还有一句中文也是类似的回文，「疑人不用，用人不疑」。似可用「you」这样的模煳词，用英半汉全的方式来译：「You can’t use someone you don’t trust。」另外一半「用人不疑」，就可以省略，否则在英文中就显得啰嗦了。
 
§　祸水
 
「祸水」怎么译？尤其是「女人是祸水」这句话怎么译？
 
好译，但要多看英文诗歌，特别是要看长达499页的贝克特诗歌全集。当然，我又在开玩笑了。
