　　著名文學評論傢，著作與主編過數十種書，除瞭本書外，經典著作有The Mirror and the Lamp，Natural Supernaturalism，編有The Norton Anthology of English Literature等，是文學評論、18-19世紀文學、歐洲浪漫主義等領域的泰鬥。

Geoffrey Galt Harpham

　　任教於美國Tulane大學，著有The Ascetic Imperative in Culture and Criticism (1992)，以及On the Grotesque: Strategies of Contradiction in Art and Literature (2007)。

absurd, literature of the 荒謬文學
 
所謂荒謬文學是指那些共同意識到人類處境在本質上很荒謬，而這種處境唯有透過自身的荒謬性纔足以錶現的戲劇和小說作品。荒謬文學的基調和劇作理論已先見於1896 年雅裏（Alfred Jarry）的法文劇作《於布王》（Ubu roi ，又譯《烏布王》）中。荒謬文學亦起源於錶現主義（expressionism）和超現實主義（surrealism）運動，以及卡夫卡（Franz Kafka）作於1920 年代的小說〔《審判》（The Trial）和《變形記》（Metamorphosis）〕。然而，在二戰（1939–1945）的恐怖經曆之後齣現在法國的荒謬文學運動，則是對傳統文化和傳統文學的基本信仰與價值標準的反叛。早期傳統觀念假設人是具有理性的動物，他賴以生存的世界至少有部分是可知的；在有秩序的社會結構裏，人是其中的一個組成份子，即便置身逆境也不會喪失自己的英雄氣概與尊嚴。然而，1940 年代後，齣現瞭尤以沙特（Jean-Paul Sartre）和卡繆（Albert Camus）等文學傢為代錶的存在主義哲學（existential philosophy）潮流。他們認為：每個人都是淪落異鄉的孤獨靈魂；這個陌生的世界裏不存在固有的人類真理、價值標準與任何意義。人生隻不過是對生存目標和存在意義徒勞的探索過程，人生本自虛無，並終將化為虛無；人生的存在是件既痛苦又荒謬的事。就像卡繆在《西西弗斯的神話》（The Myth of Sisyphus, 1942）中寫道的：
 
In a universe that is suddenly deprived of illusions and of light, man feels astranger. His is an irremediable exile. . . . This divorce between man and hislife, the actor and his setting, truly constitutes the feeling of Absurdity.
 
在一個突然失去瞭幻想與光亮的世界中，一個人就會感到自己是異鄉人，是陌生客。他的流放無可補救……人與人生之間、演員與背景之間的這種脫節，正是讓人感到荒誕之處。（杜小真譯）
