作者简介

许乃文（Brian Hsu）

　　国立中央大学英文系毕业，私立辅仁大学英文研究所毕业，英国肯大大学英国文学博士班肄业。曾先后任职英文中国邮报和英文台北时报10余年，目前专门从事翻译，译有《火线大新闻》等书。合作对象有数家杂志社、出版社、及翻译社。

Classic 经典诗句

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes

英国浪漫时期主要诗人之一拜伦（Lord Byron）在 1814 年写下一首为后世所津津乐道的诗，即《她走在美中》（She Walks in Beauty），其中知名的诗句有：She walks in beauty, like the night / Of cloudless climes and starry skies; / And all that’s best of dark and bright / Meet in her aspect and her eyes（参考翻译：她走在美中，彷彿夜晚／无云的苍穹与满天星星／暗黑与光明之最精华部／交汇在她的外貌与眼眸）。诗中反覆出现的 o’er 就是over。

说文解诗

这首诗与其说是首情诗（love poem），还不如说是对美（beauty）的赞美。1814 年，26 岁的拜伦在一场舞会中遇见新近丧偶、一身黑衣的表妹霍顿夫人（Lady Wilmot Horton），不禁感受到来自缪斯女神（Muse）的灵感而写下这首赞美之诗。这里的美不单只是指女人外在的美，也涵盖自然之美和内在之美。

在诗中是外观之意，不过平常比较常用来表示方面或观点。

重点句型

介系词片语

这首诗一开头就说 She walks in beauty。in 后面接名词（名词前接或不接冠词的意义各不相同）就是介系词片语，这种片语通常作形容词或副词用，诗句里的 in beauty 就是副词片语，用来修饰动词walk。

类似句型有 walk in the park、play in the snow、sing in the rain 等，这些介系词片语都是副词功能，但也可作形容词用，例如 He is in the park 或 a man in the park 中的 in the park 就是形容词片语。
