There is an old joke. It goes like this, “How do I get to Carnegie Hall (a famous performance Hall in NYC)?” The answer? “Practice, Practice, Practice!” Learning a language has the same response. You have to practice speaking it. The goal of this book is to give you an organized and simple approach for practicing English in all areas of hospitality. You can use it alone or with a friend and you can open it to the section you need to know and start practicing the dialogues. By the end of the book, you will know most of the vocabulary needed in the field of hospitality and should be able to understand the requests of your English speaking guests.
English is a tricky language full of inconsistencies and odd slang, but it shouldn’t be scary to learn to speak it. By providing practical and realistic conversations to practice, the reader should be able to hone or her skills so that she speaks with a natural fluid voice. We hope you enjoy practicing it and that your hard work pays off! And when we come into your hotel or restaurant, show off your English! We’ll be delighted to hear it!
Conversations 不停住对话 At the Front Desk, the desk clerk is giving driving directions to a guest. 柜台前在提供开车方向给ㄧ名顾客。
Guest: Can you help me get to Kenting National Park by car? 顾客:你能不能跟我说开车去垦丁国家公园怎么去?
Desk Clerk: It’s about two hours and twenty minutes from here if you drive. Do you know how to get to the toll road? 柜台服务员:如果你开车的话,从这里大约2小时20分钟。你知道怎么去高速公路?
Guest: Yes, but do I go right or left at the ramp? 顾客:是的,但我在匝道是到左边或右边呢?
Desk Clerk: Let me draw you a map. At the Kaohsiung Interchange, take the ramp and follow the signs for 1. 柜台服务员:让我画一张地图给您。在高雄交流道,走匝道,并顺着1号路的指标。
Guest: I know that interchange. 顾客:我知道那个交流道。
Desk Clerk: At the Wujia System Interchange take the right ramp for 88 towards Pingtung. Stay on that road for a little over thirteen miles. 柜台服务员:在五甲系统交流道走右边的匝道到88号往屏东。在那条路上再开约13公里。
Guest: Is there an easier way? 顾客:有没有更简单的方法?
Desk Clerk: Sure. You can take Route 17 along the coast right to Kenting but it is a longer drive. 柜台服务员:当然有。你可以开17号公路沿着海岸直接到垦丁,但是这是比较长的车程。
Guest: How much longer? 顾客:比较起来是多久呢?
Desk Clerk: Another twenty or thirty minutes, but it is very scenic! It follows the coast line. 柜台服务员:会多了二、三十分钟,但是这条路沿路景色非常优美!它是沿着海岸线的。
