本书特色

  ‧多用同义词,写作更生动
  要提高写作能力,善用同义词是好方法,“吃”不只用eat,还可用bolt、devour、wolf 或 gobble形容“狼吞虎嚥”;nibble 或 nibble at形容“细嚼慢嚥”。在英文写作里运用同义词,可令行文更准确、更优美。

  ‧话题生活化,贴近现代英语
  含日常话题常用词汇,例如“僭建”,政府的正式叫法是unauthorised building works(违例建筑工程),简称UBW。又如NG(虾碌),英文是bloopers。

  ‧分辨同义词,便于灵活运用
  try 和 attempt 意义接近,但attempt 通常是指难以成功的尝试。try 和strive、struggle之区别,是 strive 有持续努力的意思,struggle 的目的未必可以达到。rich 和 wealthy看似可以互用,但在常用说法如rich and famous people,只用 rich而不用 wealthy。

  ‧提供字源及有趣的历史背景
  说明部份字词的字源及有趣的历史背景。例如,lodestar 这个字本来解作“北极星”;lode 原是 load 的另一种拼法,而load 在古英文指路线、方向,所以 lodestar 是指路的明星,即是从前行船赖以导航的北极星。这字被借用来表示指导的原则或者可以模仿的榜样。

作者简介

曾钰成


  1968年毕业于香港大学,到香港培侨中学任教,于1983年获香港大学教育硕士学位,1985年出任培侨中学校长,现任该校校监。1992年民主建港联盟成立,曾钰成出任创党主席。香港回归前,曾钰成曾出任香港特别行政区筹备委员会成员。1997年至1998年出任香港特别行政区临时立法会议员。

  1998年第一届立法会选举,他在九龙西选区赢得议席。其后在2000年和2004年在九龙西成功连任。2002年获委任为行政会议成员,同年获颁金紫荆星章。2008年和2012年立法会选举,曾钰成由香港岛选区出选,成功连任,并当选为第四届及第五届香港立法会主席。2015年获颁大紫荆勋章。曾钰成于2016年从立法会退下,创办“香港愿景研究计划”,从事政策研究。现为香港中文大学社会科学院荣誉教授、“香港愿景”召集人。
