　　要提高写作能力，善用同义词是好方法，“吃”不只用eat，还可用bolt、devour、wolf 或 gobble形容“狼吞虎嚥”；nibble 或 nibble at形容“细嚼慢嚥”。在英文写作里运用同义词，可令行文更准确、更优美。

　　‧话题生活化，贴近现代英语
　　含日常话题常用词汇，例如“僭建”，政府的正式叫法是unauthorised building works（违例建筑工程），简称UBW。又如NG（虾碌），英文是bloopers。

　　‧分辨同义词，便于灵活运用
　　try 和 attempt 意义接近，但attempt 通常是指难以成功的尝试。try 和strive、struggle之区别，是 strive 有持续努力的意思，struggle 的目的未必可以达到。rich 和 wealthy看似可以互用，但在常用说法如rich and famous people，只用 rich而不用 wealthy。

　　‧提供字源及有趣的历史背景
　　说明部份字词的字源及有趣的历史背景。例如，lodestar 这个字本来解作“北极星”；lode 原是 load 的另一种拼法，而load 在古英文指路线、方向，所以 lodestar 是指路的明星，即是从前行船赖以导航的北极星。这字被借用来表示指导的原则或者可以模仿的榜样。

作者简介

曾钰成

　　1968年毕业于香港大学，到香港培侨中学任教，于1983年获香港大学教育硕士学位，1985年出任培侨中学校长，现任该校校监。1992年民主建港联盟成立，曾钰成出任创党主席。香港回归前，曾钰成曾出任香港特别行政区筹备委员会成员。1997年至1998年出任香港特别行政区临时立法会议员。

　　1998年第一届立法会选举，他在九龙西选区赢得议席。其后在2000年和2004年在九龙西成功连任。2002年获委任为行政会议成员，同年获颁金紫荆星章。2008年和2012年立法会选举，曾钰成由香港岛选区出选，成功连任，并当选为第四届及第五届香港立法会主席。2015年获颁大紫荆勋章。曾钰成于2016年从立法会退下，创办“香港愿景研究计划”，从事政策研究。现为香港中文大学社会科学院荣誉教授、“香港愿景”召集人。
