序
This handbook orients technical professionals on the essentials of proficient communication in the workplace. How to write a problem analysis report is described first, including the project background in which the managerial problem and project needs are highlighted, a detailed discussion of the technical problem, examples of the problem that the company must solve to achieve its objective(s), an emphasis on the extent to which the problem affects the company’s direction, the consequences of failing to solve the problem for both the company and a particular field, as well as a brief summary on how to solve the technical problem. How to write a recommendation report is then detailed, including the objectives, methodology and anticipated results to solve the technical problem, the nature of the problem, suggestions on how to solve the problem, a strategy outline for achieving the project goal, an emphasis on how the company would benefit from achieving the set goal(s), and a summary of how the larger industry or field would benefit from achieving the project goal(s). Next, how to write a persuasive report is introduced by citing a statistic or recent trend to attract the readers’ interest in a particular topic, describing how reader’s interests are addressed in the project planning and strategy, as well as customer service, discussing the feasibility of project success in terms of methodology, strategy and customer service, highlighting the anticipated benefits of project success, and summarizing the steps needed to ensure project success. Additionally, how to compile an informal technical report is discussed, including the managerial motivations in undertaking this project, the industrial setting in terms of customer concerns and the project group’s priorities, the problem to be solved, the project goals, the project methodology, the main results of the project, and contribution to a professional or academic field. Finally, instructions are given on how to write effective correspondence for an employment application, training application and employment recommendation.
Each unit begins and ends with three visually represented situations that provide essential information to help students to various forms of technical communication. Additional oral practice, listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing activities, relating to those three situations, help students to understand how the visual representation relates to the ultimate goal of writing an effective workplace memo. An Answer Key makes this book ideal for classroom use. For instance, to test a student’s listening comprehension, a teacher can first read the text that describes the situations for a particular unit. Either individually or in small groups, students can work through the exercises to produce concise and well-structured technical communication.
