本书收录名言警句，多选自中国古代哲学和文学着作，以及哲人和文人关于政治、人生、治学等方面的言论。这里所撷取的只是中国古代浩如烟海的典籍中的点点滴滴，但所涉及的内容丰富，思想深邃。虽然这些文字都是在古代具体历史背景下写的，但对我们仍具有智慧及道德启示，特别是某些道德准则正在消失的今天，重温古人所尊崇的一些信仰是有意义的。凡对中国古代思想和传统智慧有兴趣的人读来会觉得趣味盎然，在关于生活、处世、治学等方面都有所启发，这是编译此书的初衷。
本书条目按内容分为十五部分，为方便读者查找，又将各条目编成两个索引，附于正文后面。为便于理解，本书除将汉语条目译成英语，还对发音特殊的单字注汉语拼音，对疑难词作出解释，并对部分条目提供精要的註释和评论。
由于编译者的水平所限，所译英语难免有不妥或错误之处，希望读者指出，将来有机会再纠正。

A philosophical person can adapt himself to any circumstance; he forgets himself and gives his love to the common people.—Wang Wei (701-761; 698-759), poet of the Tang Dynasty

When you’ve seen how birds and animals live, you cannot bear to seethem killed; when you’ve heard how birds chirp and animals cry, youcannot bear to eat their meat.
