Does your dog watch TV?
Everyone with a dog claims his/her pet watches television. However, a dog’s view of the world is different from ours, so what does “watching TV” mean for it?

Experts say that dogs will follow movement on screen and may also bark. But a dog doesn’t see images the same way as we do. People think that dogs don’t see colors, this isn’t true. Dogs just don’t see as many colors as humans. There are fewer color vision cells in a dog’s eye. But dogs have more light and motion detectors than we do, so they see better at night. Dogs also see flashing light better than humans. That means they see individual pictures in a television sequence, while we see a moving film.

An interesting fact: Dogs with long muzzles tend to have extra eye cells for a wide field of vision and motion detection. Dogs with short muzzles tend to be able to see close detail better and are more likely to watch television.

学习焦点
本文先以「狗是否会看电视」来引起读者的好奇心，接着再比较狗与人的视觉差异状况。

1. 第一段先点出狗主人的看法 “ Everyone with a dog claims his / her pet watches television. ”，认为狗会看电视，其实这句话只对了一半，因为狗看到的世界与人类不同 “ a dog’s view of the world is different from ours ”。

2. 第二段先破除一般人以为狗是色盲的迷思，“ People think that dogs don’t see colors ”，其实狗只是无法看到跟人类一样多的颜色 “ Dogs just don’t see as many colors as humans. ”，原因是狗的眼球感色细胞较少“ There are fewer color vision cells in a dog’s eye.”。

3.接着说明两者的另一个视觉差异：狗有较多的感光与动作侦测器“ dogs have more light and motion detectors than we do. ”，而且对闪烁的光源更敏锐 “ Dogs also see flashing light better than humans. ”；这代表电视对狗来说，是一连串的个别图片，但是我们看到的则是动态影像 “ they see individual pictures in a television sequence, while we see a moving film. ”。

4. 第三段谈到鼻口长短不同的狗也有视觉的差异：长口鼻的狗可以侦测更宽广的视野及动作 “ have extra eye cells for a wide field of vision and motion detection. ” ，短口鼻的狗比较能看到眼前的细节，更有可能看电视“ be able to see close detail better and are more likely to watch television. ”。

1. Vocabulary

（1）claim：【动词】声称。
用法：人 ＋ claim ＋ (that) ＋ S ＋ V
Everyone with a dog / claims/ his/her pet watches television.
每个养狗的人 / 声称 / 自己的宠物会看电视

（2）detector：【名词】侦测器。
Dogs have more light and motion detectors / than we do, / so they see better at night.
狗拥有较多的光线及动作侦测器 / 比人类 / 所以牠们的夜视能力较佳

（3）individual：【修饰语】个别的，个人的。
That means / they see individual pictures / in a television sequence, / while we see a moving film.
这代表了/ 牠们看到个别图片 / 在电视上的连续画面 / 但我们看到的是动态影像

（4）tend：【动词】倾向，易于。
用法: 人 / 事物 ＋ tend to ＋ V

长口鼻的狗 / 倾向拥有较多的视觉细胞 / 以供宽广视野及动作的侦测

（5）muzzle:【名词】指犬科类的鼻口。

短口鼻的狗 / 较能看到眼前的细节/ 更有可能看电视

1.Sentence Pattern
句型：S1 ＋ V1 ＋ the same as / as（修饰词）as ＋ S2 ＋ V2
S1 与 S2 是被比较的两件事物或人，the same as / as（修饰词）as 表示两者在某方面是一样的；如果以否定方式呈现（V1 前面有 don’t 或 cannot），表示在某方面 S1 与 S2 是有差异的。

（1）A dog doesn’t see images the same way as we do.
表示狗看影像的方式与我们是不同的。

（2）Dogs just don’t see as many colors as humans.
表示狗无法跟人一样看到那么多颜色。
