作者黄玟君老师任教于国立台湾科技大学应用外语系，由于学校外籍学生日益增加，台湾学生为了能和老外聊天交流，常会问老师一些中文用语的英文说法，而她也发现学生有兴趣的这些字，像是「哈比人」、「低头族」、「打屁」，大多是现今流行且贴近生活的语汇。因此，黄老师开始蒐集这些中文用语，并以最道地的美式说法表达出来。

我在大学教书时，常会接触到许多新新人类语言，身为新时代的老师，我都会「不耻下问」，请学生们为我解惑。于是，我也渐渐从不知「小强」（蟑螂）为何物的LKK（老扣扣），变成跟得上时代潮流的麻辣教师。
这几年来学校的外籍学生日益增多，学生们为了彼此交流，常会跑来问我「轰趴」、「闭俗」、「打屁」等的英文该怎么说；有些比较认真的学生则会自己先「中翻英」，却常在直译的过程中闹笑话，让人脸上三条线。有时候听到学生将「事业线」说成career line、将「够朋友」说成enough friend，或将「噼腿」说成split legs，真是让我又好气又好笑。
也因此，近两年我开始有了蒐集中文流行语汇的想法，每当听到新新人类的语言，我便想办法将它们用最贴切、也最符合西方世界用语的方式表达出来，而这本书就是「成果」。有趣的是，在写作的过程中，我除了学到许多新潮的中文说法外，也因为在揣摩表达时，遇到很多用语无法直译成英文的情况，让我一次又一次地感受到中英两种语言及东西方文化的差异。举例来说，中文的「（他）不是我的菜。」，在英文中就变成 (He’s) not my cup of tea.，从「菜」变成「茶」，或许就可以让人感受到台湾人对美食的热爱，以及西方世界对茶的喜好。而从其他一些例子中也可以看出台湾人对主食「饭」的热爱，例如中文的「（他是）饭桶。」，英文为 (He’s an) airhead.；「（他）吃软饭。」的英文为 (He) sponges off women.。因此，读者在阅读本书之余，不妨也试着寻找东、西方文化差异的蛛丝马迹。
